Canada has a history of participation in the SMTG Krakow International Print Triennial. In the 2021 triennial’s contemporary Canadian feature exhibition, Canadian Curator Derek Besant and Polish Curator Dr. Marta Raczek-Karcz introduced an experimental approach to celebrate the collision between tradition and technology. The Krakow Biennial 2021, Dissonant Futures, features twenty Canadian artists who work in print media for the section titled ProTO-typE(s). Selected for their expertise and innovation, artists were challenged to align their work with the conceptual value of a prototype—a preliminary concept, example, archetype, or pattern for production.

The International Print Triennial Society in Krakow (Stowarzyszenie Międzynarodowe Triennale Grafiki w Krakowie, SMTG) was established in 1992 to continue the organization of the International Print Biennial in Krakow, an event whose history stretches back to 1966. The SMTG changed the frequency of the event, transforming at the same time its name to International Print Triennial (SMTG) in Krakow. The organization is dedicated to spreading information about the contemporary world of print and stimulating artistic pursuits in this field of art.
